Baltic Sea Day and World Water Week – Clean Water is Our Most Important Resource

Happy Baltic Sea Day, a celebration dedicated to one of the world’s most unique marine environments. The Baltic Sea is the largest expanse of brackish water on the planet. It is bordered by nine countries and plays a vital role in the ecosystems, economies, and cultures of Northern Europe. Its semi-enclosed nature makes it especially vulnerable to pollution and climate change, which is why protecting its waters is a shared responsibility for us all.

World Water Week on the Baltic Sea

This week also marks World Water Week, with the 2025 theme “Water for Climate Action.” and it’s happening right here on the Baltic Sea – in Stockholm. Hence, it’s a timely reminder that water is at the heart of climate resilience and sustainability. From reducing greenhouse gas emissions to safeguarding biodiversity, water connects every aspect of our environmental efforts.

At AS Chemi-Pharm we deeply value the water resources that surround us. The Baltic Sea is not just a geographical feature—it’s a source of life, culture, and inspiration. Moreover, we are committed to keeping it clean by minimizing our water footprint, improving purification processes, and ensuring that our operations do not harm this fragile ecosystem. For example, in 2024, we consumed 0.88 liters of water per kilogram of product, and we continue to invest in technologies that reduce waste and promote circular water use.

Did you know?

  • The Baltic Sea covers about 386,000 km² and is the world’s largest brackish water body.
  • It is relatively shallow and almost enclosed, which makes water exchange slow and pollution impacts long-lasting.
  • Its catchment area is four times larger than the sea itself, meaning actions on land directly affect its health.
  • The salinity of the Baltic Sea is only 7 parts per thousand vs 35 parts per thousand in the ocean which means that cats can even drink this sea water.
